The aim of breeding Latvian heavy warmblood is to preserve and improve horses
with historically determined qualities – strong constitution, conformation that
complies with the requirements of the Latvian harness horse (genetic pool),
good natured and steady, with correct, ground covering and vigorous movements,
robust and modest in terms of feeding and keeping conditions.
During the last decades less attention was paid to the breeding of Latvian harness horses, which, given the reduction of the number of harness horses, resulted in losing of the typical qualities of this breed: good temperament, steadiness, good bone structure and trust in people, which distinguished this breed among others.
These qualities of the harness horse are very important when using horses for work, tourism, therapeutic riding, children’s riding instruction and elsewhere.
Today the harness horse is our national pride, used in carriage driving competitions, children’s riding instruction and horseback riding in rural tourism.
